Beyond Bias to Inclusive Behaviour

VIDEO TEXT

If you’re an HR or Business Leader disappointed you still don’t have the diverse leadership or candidate pipelines you expected to gain, from your Unconscious Bias training, you’re not alone!

It turns out, we’ve increased sensitivity, but didn’t appreciate how challenging it is to rewire brains.

  • I became interested in neuroplasticity, when I lost the sight in 1 eye, and literally watched my brain rewire itself. It took 3 months of every waking hour, before I could see in 3 dimensions, to safely drive or cross the road.

The Fundamental Flaw in Unconscious Bias Training

To constantly be on the look-out, for hundreds of possible bias traps is unrealistic, and actually strengthens the very neurons we’re trying to break.

Why do we have Unconscious Bias?

Our brains developed Unconscious Biases, as a hack to spot threats which don’t actually apply in our modern world.

Difference is a source of competitive advantage today.

Can we Mitigate Biases alone?

Because we can’t effectively mitigate biases by ourselves, particularly when our brains are so commonly in f-state (Hallowell) fast; furious; frantic - we need a new way.

The field of Psychology offers a simple solution!

How does ACT Theory assist us?

By using inclusive behaviours, that we use every day anyway, but by consciously choosing to use them with everyone equally, (rather than just with those more like us), we can overcome our very natural discomfort of difference.

  • And, the more we do it, the better we get at it!

How can we move Beyond Bias?

There’s never been a better time to try new things with your team.

  • I encourage you to embrace your natural discomfort and consciously choose to nurture curious connections with everyone equally.
