Moving Beyond Bias to Belonging
VIDEO TEXT
As an HR or Business Leader, perhaps you’ve been pondering how to maximise Belonging, but feel stuck in Unconscious Bias?
If you’re like many leaders, you’re aware Belonging is a fundamental Human need, and you’re wanting to be one of those Inclusive Leaders who are 2.5x more likely to have a team which experience belonging and the personal and professional benefits which come with it.
Perhaps you’ve attended Unconcious Bias training, and you’re frustrated you’re still hiring or promoting people in the same mould you always were.
What you need to know, is that awareness alone, doesn’t equal action!
So what might the answer be?
I learned an important lesson a few years ago at the Commonwealth games. Sitting just 20m from the mens 4 x 100 metre semi-final, the smaller statured white skinned Aussie team, fared far better than I expected, against the hyper-muscley competitors with black skin.
The Reason?
Raw power isn’t the only variable required to win a 4 x 100m race!
It sounds obvious – but I wasn’t the only person in the crowd surprised that day!
It’s the impact of Unconscious Bias, but how do we overcome it?
The answer lies in the field of Psychology, with ACT Theory.
ACT Theory acknowledges we have no control over our automatic or unconscious biases, but by using well-honed behaviours we already have, it’s quite straight forward to become consciously inclusive.
There’s a literal handful of proven behaviours which increase Belonging in teams.
And with Belonging having a magnified impact for under-represented talent, it’s an essential element of any high performance team strategy, in either onsite, remote or hybrid work environments!
As an Inclusive Leadership and High Performance Teams specialist, I can act as your guide.
